Effects of Water Stress on Growth and Chlorophyll Contents of Ocimum gratissimum L. (Basil) [Lamiaceae]

Ocimum gratissimum is an essential plant because of its wide food and medicinal usage. Despite relevance, morpho-physiological compositions are influenced by several abiotic stresses. Hence, this study examined the effects water stress on growth chlorophyll contents O. gratissimum. Seedlings were grown in twenty-four pots, two per pot arranged using a complete randomized design with four groups: Very Wet (VWO), Moderately Water Stress (MWSO), Strongly (SWSO) Adequately Watered (AWO) as control. Fifty centiliters was applied AWO once daily, VWO twice MSWO three days SWSO week. Growth parameters: Stem height, number leaves, leaf area, stem girth petiole length determined one week after treatment for six weeks. Chlorophyll at weeks intervals eight Descriptive statistics such mean±standard deviation one-way Analysis Variance (p < 0.05) done SAS software. Results obtained showed highest mean height (27.50 ± 0.29 cm), leaves (37.00 9.0), area (735.7 4.12 cm2), (0.40 0.00 cm) (7.20 0.40 VWO. Similar results (56.70 0.65 mg–1). It could be concluded that regular watering promote increase plant.
